On March 28th 1800 an audience sat in the Imperial Royal National Court Theatre in Vienna. So far, nothing they had heard in the concert had done anything to surprise them. The instrument performed by the soloist had suggested nothing new in it's opening fanfare, typical of every piece written for the previous 200 years.
